Homeless Ministry
One of the most wonderful things that the Lord has bestowed on St. George's is the ministry of feeding and helping homeless people on a daily basis on the Church campus in downtown Orlando. Breakfast/lunch is served from the kitchen window of the parking lot seven days a week as well as dinner almost every evening. Different groups feed on different days. Our evening meal is put on by the Ephraim Project under the direction of Rachelle Petrescu on Fridays at 5:00 PM; we are blessed to feed between 250 and 300 men, women and children. In addition we distribute clothes, shoes and toiletries to these wonderful people. Many of our homeless attend Divine Liturgy and we have had some join the Holy Orthodox Church.
This Friday, May 18th we had a special, special feeding provided by the family of +ANTHONY MALID who fell-asleep-in-the-Lord earlier this year. May 18th is +ANTHONY's birthday and his family made and provided all the food for the homeless feeding. GOD Bless them and May His Memory be eternal!
For the future, we are praying that the funds become available to open a daily drop in center for services for the homeless. Personally speaking, I am so thankful to GOD that He has allowed us to fulfill one of the lines in the Troparion of St. GEORGE: 'Defender of the poor.' With the Grace of GOD and the participation of the faithful, this ministry will grow and grow. St. George's is now the homeless feeding center in downtown Orlando. +Father John
